Launceston is situated 70 kilometres (44 miles) from the place where the Tamar Estuary meets Bass Strait at Low Head. The Batman Bridge crosses the Tamar near Beaconsfield, and its opening in 1968 made it possible to take a full day drive through both sides of the Valley. Be sure to stop at Brady’s Lookout on the west side between Legana and Exeter for great views out over the Tamar.

Cradle Mountain is one of the iconic wilderness areas of Tasmania that is easily accessible by road as a day trip from Launceston. The mountains sits at the northern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park. Overnight accommodation is also plentiful at Cradle Mountain.
You can drive to the gates of the National Park, leave your car at the visitors centre, and catch a shuttle (price included in your National Park entry fee) to Dove Lake and the beginnings of the trails around the mountain.There is no direct road from Cradle Mountain to Lake St. Clair. It is about 5 days walk on the Overland Track to get between the two. If you want to drive, you will need to head back to Deloraine and then take the mountain roads (A5, B11, A10) past the Great Lake to Derwent Bridge.
For those flying in, the Launceston Airport is about 20 minutes from the Central Business District. The Spirit of Tasmania Ferry arrives into Devonport, about a 1 hour drive from Launceston. Hobart is 2 hours drive down the Heritage Highway through the Midlands. Freycinet is 2 hours drive up the Fingal Valley and south through Bicheno, Cradle Mountain is about 2.5 hours drive from Launceston, and Launceston to Strahan is about 5 hours drive via Cradle Mountain.
