Grindelwald

Grindelwald is a lovely town just 15k north of Launceston in the Tamar Valley. It was developed in the style of a Swiss village and was the vision of a Dutch immigrant to Tasmania named Roelf Vos. After selling his “Roelf Vos” supermarket chain to Woolworths, he traveled to Tasmania and made his vision come true.
The town’s construction began in 1980 around an artificial lake. It is truly a unique residential development, with houses built in Swiss style and creating a dreamlike ambiance throughout the entire village. Houses have the authentic features of true Swiss chalets and visitors feel as though they are transported to Switzerland! The settlement is surrounded by glassy lakes and views of the Tamar Valley.
On the edge of the town is the 40 hectare Tamar Valley Resort, which opened in 1989 and shares the Swiss architectural style.

Accommodation

Options in the area include self-contained family chalets and several hotels. Tamar Valley Resort is at the heart of it all and includes a range of accommodation.

Activities and Things to Do and See

Grindelwald is a beautiful place for a vacation with many activities available to delight the entire family. Adults and children alike can entertain themselves in the gorgeous surroundings. There is even the world’s longest bouncing pillow available for children!

Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the 18-hole, par 54 mini-golf course, or play a round on the ten-hole public golf course. Other popular activities include tennis, aqua bike hire, mountain bikes, canoeing on the lake, and peddle go karting, among others. In addition to the bouncing pillows, children can frolick on the playground or visit the pirate ship. Image thanks to: Tourism Tasmania & Rob Burnett.

Where to Eat and Shop

A myriad of options exist for shopping and meals right in the heart of the village. There is a shopping arcade, boutique shops, general store, craft shops, golf pro shop, bakery, cafe, clothing store, day spa, chocolatier, ice cream shop, newsagent, and hairdresser. Consider having a genuine Swiss meal at one of the many restaurants or simply enjoy a Apfeltaschen (similar to an apple strudel) at the bakery! The lakeside Alpenrose Lakeside Bistro and lounge bar is a popular option for those wishing to dine lakeside with a wonderful view of the golf course.

THE ART OF SPARKLING

Launceston - Josef Chromy Winery

“Tasmania confidently holds its place as Australia’s sparkling capital” and “arguably the greatest region for sparkling wine anywhere in the world outside of Champagne itself”. Tyson Stelzer International Wine Communicator Of The Year 2015.

The art of making sparkling is explained (and tasted along the way) from base wine to corking and wiring. The tour commences at the Cellar Door and takes in the history of the vineyard and the Tasmanian Wine Industry.

Guests will be taken through the sparkling wine making and disgorging process, then work with the winemaking team in the laboratory to choose and add the liquour, the final step in sparkling wine making. Each participant will produce a bottle of sparkling to their own taste to enjoy on the day and may order sparkling wine at their own dosage rate to be sent following their visit. Guests conclude with a 2 course lunch matched with wine and a complementary tasting.

Low Head Penguin Tour

Launceston to Low Head Coastal Reserve

The penguins found in Tasmania are the smallest of the penguin species, the noisiest, and also the only penguins with blue and white feathers (all others are black and white). Because of this they have several names, the Little Penguin, the Blue Penguin, but the most common name they are called is the Fairy Penguin.

Low Head Penguin Tours offer a unique nature experience to get up close and personal with our penguins as they return from the pristine waters of Bass Straight to nest in their burrows within the Low Head Coastal Reserve. This Reserve has the largest penguin rookery in Tasmania, and we have penguins returning every night throughout the year. Watch them swim to the surface, stand up and preen themselves before waddling up the beach. The penguin viewing is fully guided and takes approximately 1 hour, and including transfers to/from Launceston you need to allow 3.5 hours. You are welcome to bring a camera to capture your experience but NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY. As it gets cool at night please wear warm clothes and wear sturdy shoes (sports shoes OK).

(departs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday an hour before dusk).

Minimum two people required for this tour to depart.

North Eastern Tasmania Voyageur - Full Day

North Eastern Tasmania Voyageur

Picking you up from your accommodation, we head straight for the Tasman coast and the beautiful Bay of Fires (or Larapuna to give it it’s Aboriginal name). Continue our exploration of the Bay of Fires, driving through the picturesque Binalong Bay and on to Boat Harbour Point.

The next stop is the picturesque Round Hill Point. Then, we move on to Cosy Corner where you can stroll along the beach. Next, we will check out the The Gardens, Mount William National Park and then Policemen’s Point for a visit to the bird sanctuary located  where Ansons Bay meets the Bay of Fires. Leaving the bird sanctuary, we move on to the Eddystone Point Lighthouse.

After that we start our journey inland through the valleys of the Blue Tier of the North East Highlands to begin our trip home, stopping off in the valleys of the Weldborough and Pyengana region. Then back on the road to Bicheno. The route home hugs the Tasman coast, providing you with one last chance to take in the stunning views before we drop you back at your accommodation.
