Richmond is just a 30 minute drive from Hobart. It is a fantastic way to spend a day or half-day if you’re looking to break away from the city and discover some rural charm, with plenty of historical sites to boot. Not only are there plenty of sites in town, but foodies will be delighted with the nearby wineries and restaurants in Coal River Valley.
Cross the Tasman Bridge and stay on the A3 towards the Hobart Airport. Watch for the turnoff to the left after you climb over the hill leaving the city suburbs. Follow the B31 road through the Coal River Valley to the village of Richmond.
Freycinet National Park starts at Coles Bay and stretches southwards on a long peninsula dividing the Tasman Sea from Great Oyster Bay. It is home to the famous Wineglass Bay. Overnight accommodation is also available at Coles Bay, Bicheno and Swansea.
Driving time from Port Arthur to Freycinet is about 3 hours, though there is plenty to stop and see along the way. You can easily spend 5 or more hours on the trip.
