A Beautiful View of Launceston

Freelands Lookout

Location: Launceston
Distance from: Hobart - 203 km, Launceston CBD - 4 km, Devonport - 104 km

The North Esk River, Tamar River and Cataract Gorge converge in the centre of Launceston to carve the city into bits. With water swirling all around and with rolling hills undulating in the distance, Launceston is quite a beautiful sight from the Freelands Lookout.

The lookout is based at a carpark at the top of a hill in the Trevallyn neighbourhood of Launceston. Sometimes the view back towards the city is obstructed by trees. This may be especially true in the summer when the trees are growing and in bloom. But you can bet on a beautiful view to the north down the Tamar River Valley, which is especially beautiful when the sun is shining brightly. Although it may not be the top lookout in Tasmania, it is worth the few minutes it takes to drive up the hill for a peek. It is also especially useful right when you arrive in Launceston to get a better understanding of the land that you're about to visit.

Getting There

The lookout is atop Bald Hill at the end of Bald Hill Road. Take the A7 highway north on the western side of the Tamar River from Launceston to turn onto Forest Road in Trevallyn. Take a quick and sharp left onto Bain Terrace before taking a right on Bald Hill Road.

The drive from Launceston CBD is a quick 10 minutes. Hobart sits 203 kilometres away to make the drive 2.5 hours. Devonport, Tassie's main north coast port city, sits 104 kilometres to the west making the drive a little over an hour.

Facilities

Bald Hill and its Freelands Lookout are right in the middle of a Launceston neighbourhood with all the amenities that an Australian city has to offer. There is an emergency shelter at the top of the hill and a large carpark.
