Launceston Airport
Launceston Airport – 2nd Largest Airport in Tasmania
WHAT SPARKS YOUR INTEREST?
The trip from Australia to Launceston Airport is quick and easy—just over an hour from Melbourne, 1 hour and 40 minutes from Sydney, or about 2 hours from Brisbane. While it is one of Tasmania’s major airports, Launceston Airport is relatively small and straightforward to navigate, much like Hobart Airport.
On approach, your flight may descend over the Tamar Valley, offering stunning views of vineyards and the winding Tamar River. Alternatively, flights may come in from the south, providing glimpses of rolling farmland and the outskirts of Launceston.

The arrivals area is compact, with people eagerly waiting to meet passengers, drivers holding signs, and a selection of promotional brochures. Baggage collection is quick, with luggage arriving on a single carousel. Tasmania has strict biosecurity regulations, so expect an adorable sniffer dog to check your hand luggage and the carousel for any undeclared fruit or vegetables.
For transport, the car rental offices are conveniently located just outside the terminal, a short walk from the exit. Airport shuttle buses to Launceston City meet arriving flights, and you can purchase tickets onboard. Taxis depart from directly in front of the building. If you are collecting a campervan rental, you may need to call the company from the arrivals area.
The drive into Launceston is scenic, passing through lush countryside before reaching the city centre in about 15 minutes. Unlike Hobart, where the city is hidden behind the hills, Launceston’s CBD is visible as you approach.
