For a guided tour of the King River Gorge with a difference, a half-day trip on the West Coast Wilderness railway is a must, as a steam locomotive hauls you up the steep grades through the forest on rack-and-pinion track. If you’d like to find out more about Queenstown itself, the museum in the town’s first ever brick hotel has more than eight hundred photographs with plenty of stories to tell. On more practical matters, plenty of shopping is possible in Queenstown’s Orr Street, where you can find a post office, supermarkets, banks, grocers, a butcher and even a hospital, as well as some attractive parks full of local wildlife.
