Sphinx Rock Walk

WHAT SPARKS YOUR INTEREST?

Sphinx Rock Walk

Location: Wellington Park, Hobart
Length: 3 kilometres
Grade: 2 (suitable for most on a flat track with some rocky sections)
Distance from: Hobart - 15 km, Launceston - 215 km, Devonport - 296 km

The glistening waters of the distant River Derwent sparkle through the trees right at the outset of this family-friendly walk. But the entire family will have to walk single-file as the flat track is a bit narrow. You'll have to dodge a few rocks and roots along the way, but the track is well-worn and maintained.

With easterly exposure, this track gets plenty of sunshine, which makes it a perfect winter excursion. But the track really comes to life in the late winter and spring when wildflowers bloom. The spots of yellows and pinks are quite stunning against the already colourful lichen backdrop of white, grey and green.

After a short time, you'll burst out onto Sphinx Rock with 180-degree views of Hobart and the River Derwent. Off in Storm Bay's distance, you'll be able to spot pieces of Bruny and Betsey Islands. And there's no need to worry about the kids as they run ahead. The rock is protected by a locking gate to keep them from scampering off the edge. Once past the gate, keep an eye on them as the sandstone rock features steep drop-offs. It's just a shame you can't see the Sphinx-shaped rock from a distance.

Getting There

The walk starts at The Springs carpark in Wellington Park. There, you'll find plenty of parking, huts, toilets, barbeque and picnic facilities. Stay in the right lane on Davey Road out of Hobart to avoid the Southern Outlet turnoff and drive another 6 kilometres. Turn right onto Pinnacle Road. In 3.5 kilometres, you'll find The Springs carpark. The well-signposted trail starts behind the toilets.

The drive from Hobart CBD is a quick 22 minutes over 15 kilometres. Launceston is 4 hours and 43 minutes to the north. That drive spans 215 kilometres. Devonport, Tasmania's main north coast port city, sits 296 kilometres across the island. That drive should take about 3.5 hours.

Precautions

Snakes have been reported in Wellington Park. Bites and deaths are extremely rare, but be on the lookout and seek medical attention if bitten.

Weather can change rapidly and dramatically at elevation in Wellington Park. Pack warm, rain-resistant clothing. Also remember there are shelters back at the carpark.

Take caution at Sphinx Rock for its many drop-offs and supervise children past the locking gate.
