Rather than follow the A1 directly into Launceston, we will cut off to the east and take the backroads. A visit to Clarendon House, one of Tasmania’s premier historic houses, and some time to walk the streets of Evandale (Brown’s Village Store is a real treat), with perhaps lunch at the pub, it is on to Launceston.

There are some spectacular beaches as you head north from Bicheno. Then cross Mt Elephant by way of the Elephant Pass to St Marys and the Fingal Valley. Perched at the top is the famous Mount Elephant Pancakes. Yes, it is well worth a stop to try them out and talk to some interesting locals.

South Esk River and the Fingal Valley  |  Drive Map Freycinet to Launceston
The longest river in Tasmania, the South Esk rises in the highlands inland from Bicheno. It then follows the Fingal Valley to the midlands before turning north to run all the way to Launceston through Evandale and Longford. Our route from here will roughly follow the course of the river.

HIstoric Village of Evandale  |  Drive Map Freycinet to Launceston
Just like Clarendon House, the village of Evandale is much the same as it was over 100 years ago. The annual National Penny Farthing Championship Cycle Races are held in February.

The Sunday morning market is a chance to see some real country bric-a-brac and local country biscuits, jams and handcrafts.
