The Bears Went Over the Mountain

Geeveston - South

Enjoy the mixture of an old-fashioned setting with the best of the modern era to raise the comfort level, close to such rural attractions as the Tahune Airwalk and with a real fire to return to, along with a good, fresh pot of coffee or something stronger in the tapas bar.

Each of the rooms, named after teddy-bear makers of last century, can sleep two to three. Linens are of the premium, 1000-thread type and guests have an en-suite, shower-equipped bathroom, tea and coffee-making equipment, an iron and ironing board, towels, toiletries (including shampoo and conditioner, body soap and body lotion) and free wireless internet. You also have heating, cooling and an LCD television. Beds include a four-poster queen, a double, a bunk and in one case a roll-away to increase the occupancy from two to three.

The Bears Went Over The Mountain is a pet-free and no-smoking hotel, which welcomes guests of all ages. There is a mixture of old and new in the way the place has been furnished, with polished timber floors, classic country wallpaper and curtains, while being modern in its facilities and having, for example, hypoallergenic pillows on offer if you prefer them to the down ones. Luggage storage is available too, and you will find the owners to be most friendly and helpful during your stay.

The classic wood-fired heater presents a cosy place to warm up in front of in the attractive licenced cafe, which is also a tapas and wine bar. You can relax in a mixture of antique and retro timber furniture and stuffed lounge seats, with plenty of floor space. The food comes from a menu which can take into account various food issues such as allergies, and whether it’s freshly brewed coffee or some delicious Tasmanian wine, beer or cider you’re after, the place serves it until quite late in the day. A made-to-order breakfast can be booked for a surcharge between eight and ten each morning.

Exploring the Huon Trail is one of the reasons people come to this part of Southern Tasmania, and The Bears Went Over The Mountain makes a good starting point. For those who would like to find out a bit more about the history of forestry in the area, just down the road is the Forest & Heritage Centre, while other places of interest only a little further afield include the spectacular treetop views of Tahune Airwalk, Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, and Hartz Mountain National Park. Nearby Geeveston has its own visitor centre, and when it comes to dining out, is home Masaaki’s Sushi, run by one of Australia’s finest sushi chefs.

Situated in Geeveston, this guesthouse is steps from Forest & Heritage Centre and Platypus Walk Trailhead. Hartz Mountains National Park and Egg Islands Conservation Area are also within 12 mi (20 km).

A restaurant, a coffee shop/cafe, and free WiFi in public areas are available at this smoke-free guesthouse.

Housekeeping is not available.

Has been a wonderful stay, the new management has made this place an absolute wonder, and would highly recommend coming back!
