Low Head Pilot Station

Low Head - North

Home of adorable Fairy Penguins! Low Head is one of the few places in the world where you can get up close to these Little Blue Penguins. We offer affordable beachfront self-contained heritage cottages within stunning Tasmania National Park grounds. We happen to be neighbour’s with Low Head Penguin Tours and there is a footpath from your front door to the tours location, as well as Low Head Lighthouse. Meander the water’s edge of Pilot’s Bay and enjoy the abundance of open space and quiet pristine beaches. Sip local wine from the Tasmanian Tamar Valley or locally roasted coffee and dine on calamari and cake while looking out over the Tamar River in the on-site cafe. Discover the history of Low Head Pilot Station, where Pilot’s and their Coxswain have helped guide in ships since 1805. The Pilot Station is still in use today, it is the longest active Pilot Station in Australia. Explore the on-site Maritime Museum for more information and guided tours. Low Head Pilot Station is a historical precinct with eight self-contained cottages, charming heritage museum, Lighthouse and café facilities in Tasmania’s pristine Tamar Valley. These heritage convict-built cottages date back to 1825 and are each unique in story, size and charm. Each cottage is equipped with its own modern Kitchen and Bathroom facilities, living area, garden and BBQ. Located on Tasmania National Park grounds at the mouth of the Tamar River, discover an abundance of open space and spectacular water views. Low Head Pilot Station is the oldest and longest active Pilot Station in Australia, dating back to 1805 and is still active today. Venture up to gaze at Low Head Lighthouse, the third Lighthouse built in Australia (1833) and look out over the sparkling Bass Strait – or even book our Light Keeper’s Cottage next to the Lighthouse. Discover the history of Low Head Pilot Station at the Maritime Museum, stay with us and become part of its story. Our Queenslander is encircled by a grand veranda, from which you can see the Bass Strait, the Tamar River, the Lighthouse and overlook the Low Head Penguin Reserve (book a tour with Low Head Penguin Tours). The Light Keeper’s Cottage sits beside the Lighthouse and has spectacular views of the Bass Strait. The Schoolhouse (built-in 1866) has its own unique charms such as the school cloakroom, a sunny kitchen and is just meters away from the shores of Pilots Bay. Next to the Schoolhouse, perched by the water’s edge is the Pilots cottage; its master bedroom features impressive Tamar River views through windows decorated with coloured glass, and ensuite bathroom. Just outside the back garden, there are stone steps onto Pilots Bay beach.

It is possible to stay in a cottage with its own dishwasher, to have a second living room, a washing machine, or a private courtyard or beachfront property. Light Keepers Cottage has its own sunroom with view of over the Bass Strait. The Pilot’s house, Coxswains Cottage and Queensalndercan sleep a maximum of eight.

For a dining experience overlooking the Tamar River there is the onsite Pilot Station Café (open days and hours vary seasonally) to enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, excellent selection of local wines, locally roasted coffee and house made cakes. In Summer we are open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday 7:30am-3:30pm & Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:30pm for Spanish Tapas dinner, the café is usually open for public holiday Mondays, please view our menus here www.lowheadpilotstation.com.au/restaurant.

Low Head Pilot Station has an adjacent maritime museum, complete with lighthouse and foghorn (one of only two still operating in Australia and the only operating Type-G in the world). There is also golfing nearby, and there are plenty of walking tours. Platypus House and Seahorse World can be found at Beauty Point, and there are daily tours of the region’s penguin colony. Fishing is possible at the nearby jetty, and of course you can go swimming and also use the local boat ramp.

Located in Low Head, this beachfront cottage is on the riverwalk, just steps from Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum and Low Head Conservation Area. Pilots Bay and East Beach are also within 10 minutes.

Guests at this beach cottage will appreciate convenient onsite amenities such as barbecue grills and a picnic area.

All 9 soundproofed accommodations have 3 bedrooms and feature private yards and DVD players. Guests will find kitchens with refrigerators, ovens, stovetops, and microwaves. Housekeeping is available on request.
