The Salamanca Arts Centre

Visitors thirsting for cultural stimulation in Hobart need look no further. The Salamanca Arts Centre (SAC) is an arts mecca and features a combination of galleries, artist studios, theatres, retail outlets, and cafes installed in 7 heritage buildings. More than a quarter of a million people come here each year to visit any one of the current exhibits, visit the shops, attend a workshop or festival, or enjoy a performance. Formed in 1975, the SAC is a non-for-profit supported by the Tasmanian Government, the Hobart City Council, Arts Tasmania, the Australia Council for the Arts, the Government of Australia, and philanthropic trusts, donors and sponsors. In 1976, the buildings were leased out to the Community and Art Centre Foundation, a group of arts advocates who renovated the damaged buildings and created a lively atmosphere for arts programs and events. A variety of venues guarantee something for every art enthusiast, ranging from contemporary Tasmanian art at the Long Gallery, the outdoor installation space of Kelly’s Garden, visiting exhibits at the Sidespace Gallery, to musical performances or film at the Peacock Theatre. The list goes on and on and is constantly evolving and changing to fit different tastes. One thing is for sure, there is always plenty of options to choose from! In accordance with its mission to promote artistic entrepreneurism, thousands of artists are represented every year to include a range of styles and expression.
