Westbury Gingerbread Cottages

Westbury - North

Enjoy a stay in what used to be colonial accommodation, still with a few reminders of the era in the period decorations and furniture, and enjoy the use of a wide range of modern conveniences for a higher-than-average type of self-catering holiday, perfect as a base for exploring Launceston, Devonport and beyond.

Six cottages are on offer here, accommodating between two and seven and with at least one queen bed each. One in fact has a four-poster, and twin, single and sofa beds make up the numbers in others. These are fully self-contained, with each of the non-smoking houses having a bathroom with complimentary toiletries, towels and a hair dryer, a kitchen, laundry facilities and a lounge area, complete with television, DVD player and free wireless internet.

Among the many extras at Westbury Gingerbread Cottages you can find a radio and CD player, a telephone for making local calls, a courtyard with a barbecue set, a veranda and a log-style gas fire. One cottage has reverse-pump for the bedroom and combined kitchen-lounge, as well as a fruit and vegetable garden which guests are welcome to make use of, as well as a few chickens you might like to feed while you’re here.

The type of equipment you have at your disposal for cooking includes an oven and stove top, a particularly large one in ‘The Bungalow’, a refrigerator and a microwave, in addition to plenty of dishes, utensils and cookware. While some of the cottages have staircases, it is possible to accommodate guests with mobility issues if this is requested during the booking stage. If you are bringing a well behaved dog, at least one of the cottages has a pet-friendly policy, once again with advance notification.

The proprietors of Westbury Gingerbread Cottages make sure you arrive to a supply of home-baked food, as well as tea and coffee, with the ingredients for a good continental or cooked breakfast bookable in advance, for a surcharge, and replenished each day of your stay. There is also a limited housekeeping service.

Westbury has a number of attractions from the more conventional, such as St Andrews Church and Fitzpatricks Inn, to the more unusual, such as Westbury Maze – a labyrinth of high hedges – and what is possibly the largest collection of steam engines in Australia at Pearn’s Steam World. Tasmania Zoo and Cataract Gorge are about half an hour away by car, as is Launceston Airport.

Situated in Westbury, this bed & breakfast is within a 10-minute walk of Westbury Common Recreation Area, John Temple Gallery, and Westbury Sports Centre. Pearns Steam World and Westbury Maze are also within 1 mi (2 km). Westbury Station is 15 minutes by foot.

This smoke-free bed & breakfast features laundry facilities, a 24-hour front desk, and a library. Free WiFi in public areas and free self parking are also provided. Additionally, tour/ticket assistance, a garden, and barbecue grills are onsite.

Limited housekeeping is available.

Fantastic. Our favourite during 3 weeks in Tassie. We stayed for 3 nights, in the Old Bakehouse. It had heaps of space for us and could have accommodated another couple at least. It felt like coming home when we got back each afternoon. The hosts are very helpful. If we are ever in the area again, we will be staying at one of these cottages.

Nice and Cozy, bigger than expected. We stayed three nights in The Corner Cottage. It is very comfortable and surprisingly quiet. The hosts provided ample continental breakfast provisions which were topped up each day. The Corner Cottage has two nice bedrooms and we picked the one closer to the kitchen and bathroom. The lounge is huge and has nice comfortable chairs. Westbury is a nice quiet village and close to Longford, another historic village in Tasmania.
