Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse
A multiple-award-winning, up-market hostel in the heart of Battery Point, here you have an amazingly well equipped kitchen, super-fast Wi-Fi and one-hundred-percent-Australian timber beds and bedding, with more cafes, restaurants and bars in the neighbourhood than you can shake a stick at, plus free parking.
For two guests, a private double room or a private bunkroom comes with high-quality linens, wool doonas, super-fast wireless internet and a reading lamp and power point for each guest. The same goes for all guests staying in either the mixed or the female-only dorm. Shared bathrooms apply in all cases, including the rooms, and they have individual shower cubicles and individual toilet cubicles, so there is some degree of privacy despite the communal nature.
Among the many awards given to Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse over the years are the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, the Golden Backpack Award for Best Accommodation, Tasmania, and it is Australia’s Number-One hostel both on Booking.com and Hostelworld.com.
Towels are provided, luggage storage is available and your hosts are keen to point out that the tap water is pure, clean and safe to drink, so there’s no need to traipse around looking for litre upon litre of the bottled stuff.
Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse has something few hostels seem to include in their inventory when it comes to the hostel kitchen: a slow cooker. As well as discovering the delights of this little toy (it was really big back in the seventies before we had microwave ovens, which are here as well by the way), there are ovens, stove tops, a coffee machine, a rice cooker, a sandwich toaster, a cake mixer, a blender, a toaster and a kettle. It’s hard to imagine what you can’t cook here – a basic kitchenette it is not! You have the use of an impressively large refrigerator, and a freezer, plus you can head outside and cook something up on one of the two outdoor barbecues.
There is a genuine Oktoberfest dining table, seating for two on the cocktail balcony, a number of picnic tables in the garden and, in fine weather, even some picnic blankets. Fans and heating can be found in every room, there is free parking, you can do your laundry with the coin-operated machines provided, and you can relax in the sitting room, playing one of the board games available. Furnished with various antiques and Tasmanian Oak timber floors, there is a charm to Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse which you don’t find in all city-centre hostels.
Speaking of the centre, you are in historic Battery Point, so it only takes about five minutes to reach the Salamanca waterfront district. Restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and food shops a-plenty are nearby, and while you are in Hobart, Handmark Gallery is a good place to see Tasmanian artists’ work being showcased, while Narryna Heritage Museum is right next door to the Bunkhouse. A short drive will take you to the days of passenger rail travel in Tasmania, at Tasmanian Transport Museum Station, and HBA Hobart International Airport is less than twenty minutes by car.
Located in Battery Point, this guesthouse is within a 10-minute walk of Narryna Heritage Museum, Salamanca Place, and Salamanca Market. Constitution Dock and Hobart Cruise Terminal are also within 1 mi (2 km).
A bar/lounge, coffee/tea in a common area, and laundry facilities are available at this guesthouse. Free WiFi in public areas and free self parking are also provided. Additionally, a library, a garden, and barbecue grills are onsite.
Bathrooms are shared.
Montacute was a perfect hostel for our stay in Hobart. Just up the road from the harbour and all the great restaurants. The owner is hilarious and super friendly. Will definitely stay here again the next time I visit.
Holy Awesomeness! The owner treats this as if it's his home... And it is! I felt like I was staying at a friend's house with all the comfort of home! Must stay here so you can see what all the other Hostels are lacking!
