An easy, well-defined path meanders through blue gum forest, bushland and coastal headland to Baronia Beach. Tucked behind a cliff and crowned by tall trees, Baronia Beach is a hidden gem that provides a bit of isolation for a romantic escape. It's also great for a family swim. The beach is a bit rocky, but the towering sandstone cliffs give you the feeling that you found something special tucked away from the world. The waters are crystal clear and you'll be able to see all sorts of marine life nestled in the rocks. And a snorkel may reveal sea dragons. You can also pop up onto a rock near the shore to throw in a line. And while the flat track is suitable for most, there are some steps down to the beach at the end of the path.
Behind the beach, you'll notice a historic site. That's the 1900-built Baronia Hotel. Business was good for the old hotel when Hobart residents would be ferried down to the Kingston jetty. Patrons would wander the hotel's garden after sipping tea above the beach. But you can share their same view of the Derwent River's eastern shore and the Iron Pot from Baronia Beach.
Take the Southern Outlet (A6) 10 kilometres into Kingston and then bear left onto Beach Road. Turn right onto the Esplanade and follow it to its end before taking Mount Royal Road to Kingston Beach. You'll find a carpark for the beach just off Mount Royal Road and the trailhead sits at the end of the beach.
Hobart CBD is a quick 16-minute drive over 14 kilometres. Launceston is 214 kilometres and 2.5 hours away. Devonport is a 3.5 hour drive over the course of 296 kilometres.
Supervise children near the rocky shore and monitor the tide and surf.
