Freycinet Retreat
Rural, adults-only apartment accommodation, this self-catering venue affords spectacular views of Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards Mountains, off the beaten track and yet near enough for all the local attractions.
The choices on offer include Ocean Bay Retreats, perched high enough to grant a beautiful view of the bay and the mountains, with a king-size bed and space for two. Then there are Ocean View Studios, overlooking Friendly Beaches, Saltwater Lagoon and the Tasman Sea, with sleeping arrangements for two in the form of one king-size bed or a twin-bed arrangement. Finally there is The Barn Lodge, with accommodation for a group as large as eight, as well as two guides, with four twin rooms, a kitchen, hot showers and toilets. All accommodation has a no-pets policy.
As well as the essentials such as a fridge, microwave, stovetop, cookware, iron, ironing board, hair dryer and bathroom with a shower (suitable for wheelchair users), Freycinet Retreat also provides complimentary toiletries, and the properties have blackout curtains for whenever you need all the natural light gone. Bedding is hypo-allergenic, you have a 32-inch, high-definition television and access to digital channels, and the apartments and public areas are served with free wireless internet. There is a furnished balcony, and guests have access to barbecue equipment.
Parking is free at this no-smoking property, and the front desk is open daily between three and five in the afternoon. Housekeeping is provided once per stay.
There are a number of local restaurants, and seafood is a speciality, thanks in part to the Freycinet Marine Farm. Fresh berries and cool-climate wines are also recommended, and you can pick up plenty of food at local stores, farms and vineyards. There is even honey produced on the property.
There are plenty of guided walking tours, many based at Freycinet Retreat itself, taking in 1200 acres of bush and forest, where you can see a myriad of wildlife. On the Freycinet Peninsula, you can see all-round panoramas without the intrusion of light pollution and, if you are lucky, you might even see the Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights). Three courses have been mapped out for those interested in orienteering, with graded difficulty levels, and sea cruises, canoeing, wine tasting and tours of oyster farms add to the activity list.
Situated in the mountains, this luxury hotel is within a 5-minute walk of Coles Bay Conservation Area and Freycinet Marine Farm. Sandpiper Beach is 2 mi (3.3 km) away.
Along with a restaurant, this smoke-free hotel has an arcade/game room and express check-out. Free WiFi in public areas and free self parking are also provided. Additionally, a garden, barbecue grills, and a picnic area are onsite.
