6 Day The Overland Track
6 days - Guided Walk PackageWe begin with an early pick-up in Launceston—6:45am at the Grand Chancellor or 7:00am at the Penny Royal—before a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Waldheim, the gateway to the Overland Track. Our hike climbs through glacial lakes and alpine tarns to the Cradle Plateau, offering sweeping views of Dove Lake and rugged mountain ranges. With Cradle Mountain as a constant backdrop, we cross the plateau to reach our first campsite at Waterfall Valley, where we settle in under a sky full of stars.

After breakfast at camp, we trek south toward tranquil Lake Windermere, enjoying a leisurely day with an optional side trip to the historic Lake Will, named after a 19th-century coal prospector. Take time to relax, swim from the sandy shores, and savor a peaceful lunch surrounded by nature. We then return across the rolling buttongrass plains to our scenic campsite, where the afternoon is spent unwinding with hot drinks, stunning views, and perhaps another refreshing swim.

Today’s trek takes you through wild moorlands and stunning mountain vistas as you cross Pine Forest Moor, gazing over the expansive Forth River Valley toward Mt Oakleigh. We descend around Mount Pelion West to enjoy lunch at the scenic Frog Flats before ascending through lush forest onto the vast Pelion Plains. There’s an optional side trip to Old Pelion Hut, offering a glimpse into the rich history of this remarkable park.

From camp, we trek south through lush Myrtle forest and past striking tufted Pandani trees, reaching the saddle at 1,113 meters between Mount Pelion East and Mount Ossa—a perfect spot for a well-earned rest. Weather permitting, we climb Tasmania’s highest peak, Mount Ossa (1,617 meters), enjoying breathtaking panoramic views. The day ends as we descend into Pinestone Valley to camp by a creek, beneath the towering spires of Cathedral Mountain.

Today’s hike takes you through towering rainforests filled with fragrant Leatherwood and Sassafras trees, leading to three of Tasmania’s most spectacular waterfalls. We’ll explore Fergusson Falls, named after a former Lake St Clair ranger, followed by Dalton Falls and the stunning Hartnett Falls, named for the eccentric bushman Paddy Hartnett. The day concludes with a trek through Du Cane Gap and a descent to our peaceful campsite at Bert Nichols.

On our final day, we hike through a mix of eucalyptus woodland and temperate rainforest, arriving at the pristine shores of Lake St Clair—the deepest natural lake in the Southern Hemisphere. With views of Mt Ida and the towering Mount Olympus, we board a scenic 30-minute ferry across the lake, a fitting finale to our Overland Track journey. After a celebratory lunch and time to explore the visitor centre, we return to Launceston via the Central Plateau, arriving around 5pm with drop-offs at the Grand Chancellor and Penny Royal.
