Dark Mofo is back for 2026 and it’s bigger, weirder, and more wonderfully unsettling than ever. After the triumphant return in 2025, which welcomed over 119,000 attendees and generated more than $67 million in economic benefit for Tasmania, the festival is doubling down on its roots with large-scale art, feasting, light, and noise. The 2026 event takes place from 11th June through 22nd June, with the Nude Solstice Swim on 22nd June at sunrise. If you’re looking to book your accommodation for this event, please contact our Tasmanian travel agents for assistance.

Exploring Tasmania Beyond the Festival

Dark Mofo runs across two weekends with free time in between, and you’re already in one of Australia’s most extraordinary corners of the world. Whether you’ve got a free morning, an afternoon between shows, or you’re extending your trip before or after the festival, Tasmania’s best experiences are right on the doorstep. Here’s what to consider.

Wildlife

Tasmania is home to animals found nowhere else on Earth, and June is a genuinely good time to see them. The cool, quiet winter months mean fewer tourists, more wildlife activity, and a stillness to the landscape that makes encounters feel remarkable.

Tasmanian Devils. The world’s largest carnivorous marsupial exists only in Tasmania. For a guaranteed sighting, [Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary](https://tasmania.com/things-to-do/wildlife/tasmanian-devil/) near Richmond is just 25 minutes from Hobart and open daily with keeper-led feeding sessions. If you’re heading to Cradle Mountain, the Devils at Cradle experience at Peppers Lodge is another excellent option.

Platypus. Tasmania has some of the most reliable platypus sightings in Australia. The Liffey River near Deloraine and waterways around the Huon Valley are known spots. No tour required. Arrive at dawn, find a quiet riverbank, and wait.

Wombats. Common wombats graze openly at Cradle Mountain along the Dove Lake circuit, often within metres of the boardwalk. Maria Island is the other standout, where wombats roam freely around the campsite with no cars to worry about.

Whales. Humpbacks and southern right whales migrate along Tasmania’s east and southern coasts from May through October, making June prime season. Shore-based spotting from headlands on the Freycinet and Tasman Peninsulas is possible, and dedicated whale watching tours run seasonally.

White Wallabies. Bruny Island is the place to find this rare colour variant, spotted near The Neck and in open farmland. While not guaranteed, they’re regularly seen and the island itself is worth the trip regardless.

Little Penguins. Penguins come ashore at dusk at sites including Bicheno on the east coast and Bruny Island. Easy to combine with a day trip.

Day Trips from Hobart

Hobart is a brilliant base. The city is compact, the roads are quiet in winter, and some of Tasmania’s most iconic destinations are well within day-trip range.

kunanyi / Mount Wellington. A must. The mountain looms directly over Hobart and in June there’s a real chance of snow at the summit. On a clear winter’s day, the views across the city, the Derwent, and out to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel are extraordinary. The Mount Wellington Explorer Bus runs return trips from the waterfront if you’re without a car. Pack warm layers as it’s significantly colder up top than in the city. Explore kunanyi

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary & Richmond. Pair a devil encounter at Bonorong with a stop in Richmond, just 25 minutes from Hobart. Richmond is one of Australia’s best-preserved colonial towns: convict-built sandstone buildings, the oldest bridge in Australia (built 1825), and the oldest gaol. Coal River Valley wineries including Pooley Wines and Frogmore Estate are along the way.

Bruny Island. About 30 minutes south of Hobart to the Kettering ferry terminal, then a 20-minute crossing. Bruny is one of those places that gets under your skin: dramatic coastlines, white-sand beaches, The Neck lookout, local oysters at Get Shucked, cheese at Bruny Island Cheese Company, and the best chance of spotting white wallabies. A Bruny Island Gourmet Tour is a popular guided option.

Port Arthur Historic Site. A 90-minute drive southeast of Hobart across the Tasman Peninsula, Port Arthur is Australia’s most intact and evocative convict site. Allow a full day to explore more than 30 buildings, ruins, and restored period homes. The Isle of the Dead harbour cruise is worth adding. En route, the Tessellated Pavement and Tasman’s Arch are worth short stops.

Huon Valley & Hastings Caves. Heading south from Hobart, the Huon Valley is Tasmania’s fruit-growing heartland: orchards, artisan producers, cideries, and farm gates. Continue to Hastings Caves, the largest dolomite cave system in the Southern Hemisphere, and the naturally heated 28°C thermal springs. It’s a particularly appealing prospect on a cold winter’s day, about 90 minutes from Hobart.

Maria Island. Take the ferry from Triabunna (90 minutes from Hobart) to a car-free island national park where Cape Barren geese, wombats, and Tasmanian devils wander freely around the historic convict settlement. It’s a slower, more contemplative experience than the mainland and a genuine escape.

Explore all day trips and tours from Hobart

Hiking & Outdoors

June in Tasmania is cold and the days are short, but that’s not a reason to stay inside. The winter landscape is dramatic and the tracks are quiet.

Dove Lake Circuit, Cradle Mountain. About 2.5 hours from Hobart, this 6km loop around Dove Lake beneath the jagged silhouette of Cradle Mountain is one of Australia’s great short walks. Expect snow on the peaks, possibly ice on the boardwalks, and near-certain wombat sightings. Gear up properly as the alpine weather changes fast. Explore Cradle Mountain

Cape Huay, Tasman National Park. Part of the Tasman Peninsula day trip. This 5.5km return walk rewards with jaw-dropping views of the dramatic dolerite sea cliffs, the highest in the Southern Hemisphere. Explore the Tasman Peninsula

kunanyi / Mount Wellington trails. Beyond the summit drive, a network of walking tracks radiates from the pinnacle. The Organ Pipes track and the descent via the Fern Glade track offer a proper winter walk with genuine reward.

Explore all hiking and walking in Tasmania

Food, Drink & Distilleries

Tasmania’s food and drink scene is world-class, and it’s everywhere, not just at Winter Feast.

Salamanca Market. Every Saturday morning along Salamanca Place, rain or shine. Over 300 stalls selling fresh Tasmanian produce, artisan goods, local whisky and gin, cheese, bread, and crafts. Even in the middle of winter, this is one of the best markets in Australia. A short walk from the CBD and most waterfront accommodation.

Tasmanian Whisky. Tasmania has quietly become one of the world’s great whisky regions. The cool climate and clean water make for exceptional single malts. Several distilleries are accessible from Hobart: Lark Distillery on the waterfront, Hartshorn Distillery in the Huon Valley, and the Old Kempton Distillery on the Heritage Highway. Explore Tasmanian whisky

Coal River Valley Wineries. Hobart’s backyard wine region, less than 30 minutes from the city. Pooley Wines, Frogmore Estate, and Coal River Farm are among the best. Pairs perfectly with a Richmond day trip.

Cascade Brewery. Australia’s oldest operating brewery, at the foot of kunanyi on the edge of South Hobart. Tours and tastings are available, and the heritage buildings are impressive even from the outside.

Explore Tasmanian food and drink

Aurora Australis

Winter is the best time to see the Southern Lights from Tasmania, one of the few places in Australia where sightings are genuinely regular. June’s long nights and clear winter skies create the right conditions. Unobstructed views facing south are what you need: kunanyi / Mount Wellington, Rosny Hill, the South Arm Peninsula, and Bruny Island’s southern beaches are all popular spots. Keep an eye on aurora forecast apps during your stay. When conditions align, the display can be extraordinary.

Heading Beyond Hobart

If you have more time before or after the festival, consider extending your trip north.

Freycinet National Park & Wineglass Bay. About 2.5 hours northeast of Hobart, Wineglass Bay is consistently ranked among the world’s most beautiful beaches, backed by the distinctive pink granite Hazards. The lookout hike (about 90 minutes return) is genuinely one of Australia’s great short walks. Explore Freycinet

Cradle Mountain. If the festival’s visual language of fire, darkness, and wild nature resonates with you, a night or two at Cradle Mountain before or after the festival is a natural extension. It’s one of Australia’s iconic landscapes and an entirely different kind of wilderness experience.

Launceston. Already on the radar for Baker Boy and Folk Bitch Trio at the Albert Hall. Tasmania’s second city is worth an extra day: Cataract Gorge is a 10-minute walk from the CBD and genuinely spectacular, the Tamar Valley wine country is close by, and the food scene has been on the rise for years. Salamanca & Battery Point: Best for the Winter Feast

If Winter Feast is your priority, you won’t do better than Salamanca and Battery Point. Princes Wharf Shed 1 and Salamanca Lawns, the home of the Feast, are right on your doorstep. It’s also the most atmospheric part of Hobart, lined with Georgian sandstone warehouses, boutique galleries, and excellent restaurants.

Salamanca Suites / Salamanca Terraces, Salamanca Place, Hobart. Self-contained apartments in the heart of the Salamanca precinct, perfect for an extended stay.

North Hobart: Best for the Film Programme & Late-Night Dining

North Hobart is Hobart’s most vibrant dining and nightlife strip, and it’s home to the State Cinema at 375 Elizabeth Street, which is the venue for the entire Dark Mofo film programme. If catching films and eating well between shows is your priority, staying here makes perfect sense. It’s a 15–20 minute walk or short cab ride from the CBD and waterfront festival venues.

Islington Hotel, 321 Davey Street, South Hobart (5 minutes from North Hobart). A small, luxury 1847 Regency-style mansion with just 11 rooms, artwork by Brett Whiteley and David Hockney, and an infinity-edge garden. Perfect for those wanting a quieter, boutique retreat close to the action.

– Look for serviced apartments and Airbnb options along the Elizabeth Street strip itself for easy walk-in access to the cinema programme.

Sandy Bay: Best for the Nude Solstice Swim

Sandy Bay is a peaceful, upmarket suburb directly south of the CBD, about 10 minutes by car. It’s where the Nude Solstice Swim takes place at Long Beach at sunrise on 22nd June. Staying here suits those who want to avoid the CBD bustle, have their own vehicle, and still get to festival venues easily.

Wrest Point, 410 Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay. An iconic Hobart landmark and 4-star hotel right on the Derwent waterfront, with a casino, heated indoor pool, sauna, gym, and multiple restaurants. Exceptional value for the quality.

Bay Hotel Apartments, 123–127 Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay. Self-contained apartments in fashionable Sandy Bay, minutes from the CBD waterfront and Long Beach.

429 Apartments & Suites, 429 Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay. Well-priced waterfront rooms with Derwent views and easy access to the CBD via Sandy Bay Road.

MONA / Berriedale: Best for the Museum Experience

If MONA programming is central to your Dark Mofo experience (the Hard Core exhibition, Sex + Death Day Club, spectra, The Gesualdo Six), staying on-site or nearby transforms the commute into part of the adventure. MONA is 12km north of the CBD, about 15 minutes by car or 25 minutes by the MONA ferry from Brooke Street Pier.

MONA Pavilions, 655 Main Road, Berriedale. Eight architect-designed, river-facing luxury suites set within the museum’s grounds. The ultimate Dark Mofo base for art obsessives, with exclusive festival packages including VIP Winter Feast entry and Night Mass tickets available for June 2026. Book well in advance as these fill up fast.

Riverfront Motel & Restaurant, closer to the Berriedale/Glenorchy area, a more affordable option for those prioritising proximity to MONA over CBD access.

Launceston: For Baker Boy & Folk Bitch Trio at Albert Hall

If you’re making a trip of it and heading to Launceston’s Albert Hall shows, you’ll want a night or two up north. Launceston is a 2-hour drive from Hobart and well worth the detour.

Peppers Silo Hotel, 2 Bridge Road, Launceston. A striking converted grain silo on the Tamar River, 1.5km from the CBD and a short walk from the Seaport precinct. One of Australia’s most distinctive hotel conversions.

Peppers Seaport Hotel, 28 Esplanade, Launceston. Contemporary nautical-style hotel in the lively dockside precinct, 700m from the CBD and Albert Hall.

Mercure Launceston, 29 Cameron Street, Launceston. A solid mid-range option adjacent to City Park, with free parking and easy access to the Albert Hall venue.

General Tips for Dark Mofo Accommodation

Book as early as possible. Dark Mofo is peak winter demand for all of Hobart. Prices can double on festival nights and the best properties sell out months in advance. If you’re attending the full fortnight, locking in accommodation now is strongly advised.

Think about transport. Hobart’s CBD is compact and walkable for most festival venues, so a central location saves you significantly on taxis and rideshares. Uber and taxis run but can be scarce and expensive after Winter Feast or Night Mass. Walking distance is king.

Consider a kitchen. A two-week festival with dinners at Winter Feast, late-night bar tabs, and ticketed shows adds up quickly. A self-contained apartment with a kitchen helps manage costs.

MONA access. The MONA ferry departs from Brooke Street Pier on Hobart’s waterfront. It’s the most scenic option for getting to the museum and runs regularly during the festival. Driving is also easy with free parking available on-site.
