MT WELLINGTON

We continue up Mount Wellington, also known as ‘Kunanyi’, the Aboriginal name given to the mountain by the traditional owners of the land. Mount Wellington is the backdrop to Hobart City, with breathtaking panoramic views of the city at 1271m above sea level. This perspective of Hobart includes the Derwent RiverRiver, Storm Bay, surrounding suburbs and beaches. This is one of the most unique perspectives of Hobart to be enjoyed, from a ‘bird’s eye view, perched high above the city.

 

 

CASCADE BERWERY 

We continue our tour after lunch, travelling down the mountain to see the iconic Cascade Brewery standing in startling, gothic isolation next to the clean-running Hobart Rivulet, Cascade is Australia’s oldest brewery (1832). A great stop for a photo opportunity.

 

 

JACKMAN & McROSS  Battery Point                                                         MORNING BREAK

Next we take the picturesque drive down off the mountain, through the natural bush setting to the historic suburb of Battery Point. Lovely modern Victorian decor awaits at Jackman & McRoss, with a charming vibe and a great reputation for coffee pasties & savouries. Popular with locals and travellers alike for the very friendly service.Your choice of tea/coffee/fruit juice or soft drink as a morning refreshment. If you are hungry and want a bite to eat before lunch this is the place to buy it, yum….

After refreshments we take our tour up towards the unique Derwent Valley, through the township of Plenty (approx 45 minutes), to enjoy lunch at the ‘The

Salmon Ponds Cafe’. The early European settlers introduced salmon, largely because of the popularity of fishing but also because of the unexpected economic benefits. After a number of failed attempts to transport them, the first live salmon and a small number of trout eggs arrived at these ponds in May 1864. The cafe offers offers fantastic Tasmanian produce, including top quality seafood. The menu tempters include…

MT FIELD NATIONAL PARK – RUSSELL FALLS WALK                  

20 minute walk round trip will take you through a unique bush, comprising of towering swamp gums, the tallest flowering plant on earth and species typical of wet forests and cool temperate rainforests, such as dogwood, musk and myrtle towards the falls, the track is also framed by stunning tall tree ferns. The falls themselves are superbly picturesque to say the least. A very memorable experience and a wonderful photo opportunity.

 

 

NEW NORFOLK                                                                            AFTERNOON DRINKS 

As originally built, the Bush Inn at New Norfolk was a typically English Inn of the nineteenth century. 1823 the arrival of a most extraordinary woman, Ann Bridger, who would within a year be the proprietor of the Black Snake Inn, and a year later be destined to play a major role in the lives of so many people in the young town of New Norfolk, and in the development of the town itself. Ann Bridger, a widow, bought with her from England her son, Henry, and two daughters, £500 ($1,000) in cash and £200 ($400) in ‘various merchandise for investing in agricultural pursuits’, and a desire to succeed.
