Discover Tasmania’s rugged heart on the only full-day tour to the Great Lake and the untamed Central Plateau. Journey with your expert Tasmanian guide, David, whose deep local knowledge and engaging stories bring this remote wilderness to life.

Departing from the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre in Hobart, you’ll travel north through the rolling farmlands of the Southern Midlands to the historic highland town of Bothwell, the gateway to the Central Plateau. Stop for a warm drink before visiting the heritage-listed 1916 Waddamana Hydro Power Station and learn the fascinating story of its creation, operation, and dramatic decline — shared through the insights of your guide, a former power industry professional.

Continue through the trout-fishing community of Flintstone to Arthurs Lake, where you’ll discover how two lakes became one and learn the surprising tale of where its waters flow. Enjoy a relaxing lunch (own expense) at the Arthurs Lake Roadhouse before travelling to the vast Great Lake, a high-country expanse framed by alpine winds and striking wilderness scenery.

Take a short walk to investigate Reynolds Island and capture panoramic views from the Great Lake Lookout before heading deeper into Tasmania’s alpine wilderness. Stroll through the pristine pencil pine forests of Pine Lake, a sanctuary for species found nowhere else on earth, and then on to Liffey Forest Lookout to witness where the plateau drops away into the lush valleys below.

The return journey travels through the charming midlands town of Kempton, where you can admire its colonial architecture before arriving back in Hobart around 5:30 pm — with unforgettable memories of Tasmania’s high country landscapes and stories.
