Thousand Lakes Lodge

Away from the towns and cities with the mountains in the distance and a wild plateau as far as the eye can see, this is the place for four-star comfort in rooms with or without their own en-suite, with a real fire to relax in front of in cold weather.

Upstairs in the Explorer rooms you have a king bed with room for between two and three, an en-suite bathroom with a shower, although there are a few with baths, heating, a continental breakfast and a view of the Central Plateau which is truly amazing. Also up here, with one exception on the ground floor, are the Pioneer rooms with their queen beds, heating, continental breakfast and a private bathroom located elsewhere in the building. Views of either the beginnings of the River Ouse or the Plateau depend on which room you are in, and one of them is fully wheelchair-accessible.

Guests at Thousand Lakes Lodge may arrange for other bedding combinations, including the use of a roll-away, splitting beds into two singles and so on. Free parking is part of the offer at this four-star hotel, and with it being non-smoking you won’t have to put up with the scent of stale tobacco in the furniture. A laundry, library, a restaurant, a bar with a lounge, luggage storage and daily housekeeping add to the enjoyment and comfort, along with little extras like the loan of a hair dryer, and having complimentary toiletries and a safe in your room. You also have business facilities here – just ask the friendly and helpful staff during the hours the front desk is open.

The view of the mountains across the plateau draws many an active holidaymaker out into this beautiful part of Tasmania in order to explore further, and Thousand Lakes Lodge has a bike-hire service so you can cover more distance than on foot if you prefer. The lodge clearly left a good impression on the Lonely Planet crew, who in 2018 listed it in third place in their 10 Best New Places To Stay in the world!

You are about ninety minutes’ drive from Launceston, and the remoteness from built-up areas is part of the charm. As well as the eponymous Thousand Lakes there are the Great Lakes to the east and the Walls of Jerusalem to the west. Throughout this World Heritage Area of the Central Highlands, you can find wildlife a-plenty, such as Tasmanian devils, quolls, wombats, all manner of birds, bugs and fish, in a free-walking area where you can go anywhere your footwear or the conditions permit. And for the anglers among you, there are guided fishing packages organised in conjunction with the lodge.

Situated in a national park, this hotel is 0.1 mi (0.1 km) from Tasmanian Wilderness and within 12 mi (20 km) of Liawenee Conservation Area and Rainbow Point Conservation Area. Remarkable Rock Conservation Area and Five Mile Pinnacles Conservation Area are also within 20 mi (32 km).

A restaurant, a bar/lounge, and a snack bar/deli are available at this smoke-free hotel. Free continental breakfast and free self parking are also provided. Other amenities include laundry facilities and a library.

This hotel has 9 rooms.

Amazing Place. My wife and I stayed for two nights earlier in the month. This was a wonderful experience, unique to anything I have experienced before. The staff were exceptional. I’m not going to go into too much detail, only to say that this place is a must when in Tasmania. Hope to return to this amazing place soon.

1000 per cent perfect! We so enjoyed our recent two night stay at Thousand Lakes Lodge! Located in the remote Central highlands, this is a perfect base for anyone wanting to fish the lakes but just as ideal for anyone just wanting to relax and take in the natural surroundings! Wildlife abounds with wallabies, wombats, echidnas and platypus in plain view from the lodge. The lodge itself oozes comfort and the blazing fireplace cannot be beat on a cold Tassie night! With great food and the friendliest staff you could find, this is a truly special place to stay and get away from it all! Do yourself a favour and book yourself in!
