Waterfall Bay Walk Tasman Peninsula

Self Guided Walking Tour of Waterfall Bay, Tasman Peninsula Tasmania

The Tasman Peninsula between Eaglehawk Neck and Tasman Island offers some of the best clifftop and coastal walking in the world. This walk at Waterfall Bay requires driving to an area that is not visited by coaches and large tour groups. You are very likely to be the only ones in the area: this is a chance to experience the majesty and solitude of this very scenic coastline.

As you drive onto the Tasman Peninsula, turn east on the C338 (Blowhole Road) at Eaglehawk Neck. Drive to the Blowhole, Tasman Arch and the Devil's Kitchen formations and spend as much time as you like in this area.

Waterfall Bay.   The turnoff to Waterfall Bay is on your left as you drive back towards the A9 (Arthur Highway). Watch for Caribbean Court and Penzance Road (both on your left) and pass both these. About 100 meters (yards) past Penzance Road, Waterfall Bay Road is a sharp left turnoff. Drive to the end of the road and take the walks on the clifftop paths. This is incredible scenery, not visited by bus and tour groups.

Waterfall Bay Walk Directions

The track climbs from the path around the cliffs of Waterfall Bay, through tall, slim, regrowth stringy bark gum trees and large clumps of grass. There are a number of lookout points as the track skirts the 300 metre cliffs, and these provide excellent views back along the coast towards Tasman's Arch. From this area it is possible to take a short walk down beside the creek and to actually go behind the falls themselves before walking out to a lookout point at Waterfall Bluff.

After returning to the main path, you will see a sign marked "Fortescue Bay," and after about another 300 meters, a sign marked "Clemes Peak Steep and Rough." Follow this path and walk approximately 45 minutes to the summit of Clemes Peak. There are excellent views from the summit of Clemes Peak and looking to the southwest, you will be able to see the summit of Tatnells Hill the turning point for this walk.

When the track reaches a signpost which shows the way to "Taranna via Balt Spur" follow the direction of the sign along a track which will lead to the summit of Tatnells Hill.

The 360 degree view from the summit of Tatnells Hill is one of the best on the Tasman Peninsula and takes in many of the islands to the north and you can even see as far as Mt Wellington, Bruny Island and Adamsons Peak in the west. Return to Waterfall Bay car park by retracing your steps.

Allow about 3 hours to do the walk comfortably. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended and, since many of the paths are near cliff tops and are unfenced, a deal of caution is required.
