Tasman Island Adventure Cruises
Any visit to the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur is incomplete unless you take the Tasman Island Adventure Cruise from Pirates Bay at Eaglehawk Neck as part of your Tasmania holiday.
This is some of the most spectacular, rugged coastline in the world, and has long been the graveyard of mariners unfortunate enough to be shipwrecked here. It is one thing to walk the cliffs and look down on the Tasman Sea and the Great Southern Ocean, but quite another to venture out onto the water to explore the coast at sea level.
The unusual coastal features of the coastline, the best known and most visited being "The Blowhole," "Tasman's Arch" and "The Devil's Kitchen," have been formed by the action of the sea carving caves into the cliffs.
Over a long period of time, the action of the waves cuts deeper and deeper, causing a collapse of the cave roof and an expansion of the cave itself. If the cave roof falls in, a feature such as Tasman's Arch is created, and when the bridge collapses, one such as the Devil's Kitchen is formed.
The coastline of Tasman Peninsula is riddled with such formations, and while you can see the famous ones (The Blowhole, Tasman's Arch, The Devil's Kitchen) from land, it is only by boat that you can appreciate the grandeur and majesty of the area. The perspective from water level is entirely different.
There are two different Tasman Island Boat Tours available, but the best one in our opinion is the Tasman Island Adventure Cruise trip which leaves from Pirates Bay at Eaglehawk Neck.
This wonderful 3 hour experience lets you see the Tasman Peninsula's truly spectacular coastline up close, so close that you will venture into sea caves, explore the nooks and crannies of the coast and feel the sea and the wind at its best. The wildlife and the seabirds you are likely to see on the cruise are unique and amazing.
