Much of Northeast Tasmania is drained by the North Esk and the South Esk Rivers. These join at the head of the Tamar Estuary, right in the heart of Launceston. First settled in 1806 by Lieut. Col William Paterson, Launceston quickly became the centre of a large pastoral and farming industry. Paterson named the city after Launceston, Cornwall in England, the home town of the then Governor of New South Wales. Many of the buildings downtown have been beautifully preserved and restored - Launceston has some the best examples of Victorian Architecture in Australia. The city has a temperate climate, with four distinct seasons. It can be very foggy in June July and August, and the months of September through to April are the best to visit.

Cataract Gorge is a short distance from the City Centre, and is home to many species of local plants and animals. It has been carved through solid rock by the South Esk River. James Boag established his brewery in Launceston in 1883 and has continually brewed its fine beers since. Boags is known as one of Australia's premium beers. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is not only a fine example of victorian Architecture, it also houses some wonderful exhibits and art exhibitions. Another good example of Victorian Architecture is the General Post Office, completed in the 1880's. Launceston's passion for gardens is reflected in City Park, home of the John Hart Plant Conservatory and a very interesting Japanese Macaque Monkey enclosure.
