Launceston (pronounced lon-ses-ton) is the second largest city in Tasmania, and was settled in 1804 by William Paterson. He named it after the city of Launceston in Cornwall, England. It is situated at the inland end of the Tamar Valley, a major scenic grape growing and winery area in Northern Tasmania. Situated where the North and South Esk Rivers join and become the Tamar River, Launceston is the centre of a very fertile farming and rural region. Many local villages such as Evandale , historical houses and estates have been preserved and are worth a visit.
Launceston is the ideal base from which to explore Cradle Mountain on a day tour, take a winery visit , or enjoy walking in Cataract Gorge, situated very close to the centre of Launceston City. It is also the departure point for the Launceston to Hobart Cycling and Walking Trip, as well as the longer 3 Day and 7 Day Cradle Mountain Walking expeditions.
If you are staying in Launceston, it offers a good range of hotel styles and values ... we suggest you check out the Launceston Accommodation options to be sure your Launceston Hotel is exactly of the quality and location you require.
