Port Arthur was a place to be feared from when it was established in 1833 until its closing in 1877. The most hardened and repeat offending convicts from all over the Australian Convict Penal system were sent here for punishment and reform. A lot of the Port Arthur prison complex remains, restored into the Port Arthur Historic site.
Situated on the Tasman Peninsula, itself a naturally difficult place from which to escape, Port Arthur was a "prison within a prison," man made shackles set inside a peninsula with only one narrow land based connection to the rest of Tasmania at Eaglehawk Neck. This is a spectacularly scenic area and there is as much for the walker, nature lover and photographer as there is for the historian or casual visitor. It is well worth staying on the Peninsula for 3 or 4 nights if you have the time in your total Tasmania holiday.
The hotel with the best proximity to the Port Arthur Historic Site is the Comfort Inn Port Arthur. It overlooks the Port Arthur Historic Site itself and gives a great feel for what it was like at Port Arthur when the prison was in full swing 150 years ago.
Stewarts Bay Lodge Port Arthur is set in natural bushland within easy walking distance of the Port Arthur Historic Site. Its individual cabins are excellent quality accommodation and enjoy water or bushland views. Set on a slope running down to the water, it is a most attractive accommodation. The Lodge restaurant is excellent, one of the best places for dining at Port Arthur.
Immediately opposite the entrance to the Port Arthur Historic Site, Port Arthur Villas are spacious studio and two bedroom villas, fully self contained and built around an attractive open area.
For some of the best value in accommodation near Port Arthur, consider the Best Western Lufra Hotel Eaglehawk Neck. This fabulous example of 1950's art deco has been renovated and modernised - it is a real experience. The views are absolutely fabulous and it puts you in position to explore the whole Tasman Peninsula.
As a base for the Tasman Peninsula, A Classic Cottage at Port Arthur, is excellent. The accommodation is situated about 5 Kms from the Port Arthur Historic Site. The The Fox and Hounds Inn Port Arthur is a more conventional motel style hotel, but is well worth looking at.
Since nothing on the Tasman Peninsula is very far from the Port Arthur Historic Site, your choice in the Port Arthur area is one of hotel style, rather than location.
